What comes to mind when you think of art? Dazzling colors? Amazing textures? Majestic creations? Yep. Art is a dimension that has no end. Speaking of art, I attend Santa Rita Middle School (7th grade) and take art as an elective. Art class may not be given that much favor by “the cool kids”, but it is an absolutely fabulous class. Why? Because there are no criteria for what you do in art. The sky is the limit, giving you all the freedom you want. No art is terrible, because every artist’s art is good in one way. Something that people always say when they think of art is sculptures and paintings. But that’s not it! Art can also be seen in the real world. Every little aspect has some specialty and has a good look! It all depends on the viewer. Take flowers for an example! They are filled with vibrant colors, soft textures, and are practically art themselves!
Speaking of flower art, there have been a lot of artists who drew or painted flowers as their artist’s profession. And one of the best was Georgia O’Keeffe. O’Keeffe was known for her abstract and enlarged flower paintings, as she made them look beautiful, interesting, and abstract all at once! (MORE ON O’KEEFFE HERE ). Georgia O’Keeffe was a very inspiring artist to many, as people adored her paintings. Speaking of inspiration, my art teacher, Mrs. Doerr, and our whole class was inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe, and started making our own abstract/big flower designs. But, instead of water coloring our final drafts, we’d make them using oil pastel.
It was quite hard to make up my mind on what flower I should draw, as there were many options. But finally, I came up with the idea of drawing the lotus, as it looked great, and it was my mother’s favorite flower (early birthday present in the making π).

I loved the image of the flower as soon as I saw it, and quickly decided it was the flower I was going to draw! The only problem was that I didn’t know if I could draw something so complicated. Little by little, I sketched the petals and details of the lotus. I never thought I could draw something so detailed, but by opening my drawing eye, and with focused strokes, I drew the impossible:

To people who are excellent artists, it may not look like much. But to me, it looked like a masterpiece! I received an all-set from my art teacher, and started my final draft. I re-did my sketch, but on a larger sheet of construction paper. It was now time for the feared oil pastels! My teacher had told us that we could mess up in many ways, and gave us helpful tips on how to use the pastels. I had picked specific colors, and on a course of 3 days of coloring, I made one of the best pieces of art in my whole life! Drumroll please……..

Things weren’t easy though… I kept on mixing the colors up, and had trouble blending the colors perfectly. But still, by pushing through and using all the creativity I had, I made it!
Art was always interesting for me, and this was one of my best art experiences and creations ever! I learned several things, such as if you never give up, you will always succeed and get great results, and that if you use your creativity at full potential, you can make something great! My father thought my lotus was so good, he said he’ll frame it on the wall! If you want to learn how to make your own oil pastel masterpieces, check out the following helpful links:
